 The intelligence circle is based on observation & tracking surveillance systems with capabilities of collecting intelligence over long ranges. These systems gather intelligence over very long ranges in a concealed, out-of-sight manner.

 The Intelligence Circle goes beyond mere observation—it’s about enhancing situational awareness and providing a robust defence against potential threats. BEE5, the system representing this circle, provides high-performance electro-optical infrared (EO/IR) systems with excellent image quality built for long-range recognition of objects, obstacles, and threats. This system enables early decision-making and preparedness in active situational awareness scenarios that require long-range observation and intelligence.

The system incorporates cutting-edge integrated multi-sensor technologies for day, night and low visibility surveillance.

 The sophisticated and compact multi-sensor observation system incorporates a high-definition (HD) cooled mid-wave infrared sensor, HD day camera, and a short-wave infrared camera. The latter sensor allows operators to see effectively through obscurants such as mist, humidity, fog, dust, or smoke, ensuring that threats are not missed and are accurately identified and categorized. Its high-quality line-of-sight stabilization ensures a sharp image for operators at the narrowest field of view, even when fully zoomed in.

The BEE5 has a proprietary C2 system and can be integrated with other C2 systems. Control and configuration are managed by one interface on one workstation by a single operator.

Advantages and disadvantages

The BEE5 offers a host of benefits. Its extended detection and recognition ranges allow for precise target examination. The systems in the fifth circle are characterized by a small IFOV (Instantaneous Field of View), meaning they offer better resolution and thus improve the system’s DRI (Detection, Recognition, and Identification) performances.

Despite its impressive features, the BEE5 system does have a few limitations. Long observation ranges require as narrow a FOV as possible, making the view through the system akin to looking through a keyhole. Therefore, these systems are usually focused on a specific area or respond according to the detection of a target through other means that have a wider FOV.

 Nevertheless, these narrowly-fielded observation systems can serve as powerful intelligence tools when combined with other sensors (such as radar, uncooled electro-optical systems with a wide field, AIS, satellite imagery, etc.). The integrated systems provide comprehensive area coverage, maximum target identification, and classification accuracy. One scans and detects, and the other classifies and tracks.

Another disadvantage of the system is its high acquisition, operation, and maintenance costs. Cooled thermal imaging cameras use an inertially integrated cooling system to increase the sensitivity and accuracy of the thermal image. That allows the cooled thermal channel to see furthers than the uncooled channel and with much image clarity. The high performance of the cameras comes at a higher cost than standard uncooled LWIR cameras. The parameter that differentiates the added value of a cooled system is also what justifies its cost-effectiveness. These systems are used for high-quality observation applications, which, combined with additional sensors, provide accurate data that eliminates the use of lower-resolution systems. In some cases, we can also see a combination of cooled and uncooled long-range imaging systems working in correlation according to task prioritization, environmental conditions or alert level.
